Essence of Tea’s 2014 Yunyun & 2015 Yunya — TeaDB James InBetweenIsode Episode #47

A pair of very decent mid-range teas from Essence of Tea. Yunyun and Yunya were harvested from the same Menghai County village in different years.

  1. Nice to see this. I remember liking the yunyun alot, smoke was the predominant characteristic but by steep 2 it was gone from the liquid for me. A lot of interesting flavors, I wrote brown sugar and buttery bitter greens. I thought at the time that this was really really green, even for a freshly made puerh in Menghai. Interesting to see it a year later, had it been sitting around in Seattle for most of the samples life or Malaysia? I think of the 4 pressed, I’d most likely go for the Yunya. Thanks for doing the video!

    • Hi Zach,

Thanks for the comment. I am indeed a fan of both teas. The YunYun arrived in Seattle in February or March and hung around until I filmed this ep. The YunYa was obviously sent more recently! I enjoy it alot. With the YunYun, perhaps there’s some variation piece to piece. The smokiness on mine seemed to endure for quite some time!

  2. Nice review James. It was interesting listening to your impressions on these teas. I’d agree with you about these teas – for the long term, I’d probably put my money more on the Yunyun, I think the heavier characteristics of it will work better with time.

I remember Kathy and I mentally going back and forth about whether to buy and press the Yunyun last year. The smoke is an obvious characteristic, one which we thought will go over time, but such an easy characteristic to spot that for some people it will overshadow the qualities of the tea beneath. For the quality of the base material though, we just couldn’t pass it up in the end.

Thanks for the reviews. I’m glad you enjoyed them.

    • Hi David,

Thanks for the comment and the teas! This was a fun comparison and I enjoyed both the teas a good deal. Hope all is well in Asia.

ps. Should be some more EoT reviews coming out soon. We’re very backlogged now, but they’ve already been filmed!
