2006 Old Bear Raw Pu’erh — White2Tea — TeaDB James InBetweenIsode Episode #8

Inbetweenisode Episode #8 from James. The tea is a 2006 Fang Cha Raw Pu’erh appropriately titled the Old Bear. Smoky and strong, the Old Bear also develops a really nice softer form in later steeps.

    • Hi Peter,

Thanks for the comment. This tea is certainly not for everyone. For me, it is a suitable alternative to pipe smoking :).

      Cheers!

  1. Hi James,

You hit the nail on the head with this one. I also got the Often and Old bear and found the old bear to have some newer Xiaguan qualities, with a nice bold attitude, I really enjoyed it. As for W2T bricks, I prefer the White Whale, but it’s apples and oranges due to the smoke and age differences.
The Often was alright, being one that I enjoy more before work grandpa style than sessioning it, it brought out a better viscosity and sweetness for me personally, the leaves were good.
I look forward to the future plans here on Teadb.
    All the best,
    Rogo

    • Hi Rogo,

Thanks for the comment. I think I agree. The White Whale is a more interesting and dynamic, but this tea does its job very well.

      Cheers!

  2. Hi James , the sound on this episode is very low – I can barely hear you , which is a great shame . All the best ! Simeon .

    • Hi Simeon,

Thanks for the feedback! The camera settings/audio are the same as they are for normal episodes/inbetweenisodes. Forgive me, but are you sure your volume isn’t low? Denny does talk louder than me so I’ll try to speak up in the future :).

      Cheers!

  3. Hi James,
    I loved this episode!
I have the Often Tuo, Old Bear, and ordered a sample of the Gaoshan Qingbing and I have not had a chance to try any yet. I really appreciate hearing your reviews on all three teas. I may give the Often away, but my husband loves a good “peaty” Islay Scotch, so this will be a good winter tea for him.
The Gaoshan sample I received looked a little sketchy, but I may just give it a try tomorrow AM before work.
Thanks again for all your info.
    Carolyn

    • Hi Carolyn,

Glad you enjoyed it! It seems you’ve ended up with the exact same tea quantities as me. The Gaoshan is quite good for what it is. Far more mellow than this tea. Pretty easy drinking at least for me.

The Often is decent enough, but I have enough of daily drinking teas that I think I’ll probably end up drinking the Old Bear far faster.

      Cheers!

  4. This is the 3rd puerh I ever tried, so I obviously have an almost zero experience with puerh.

I’ve been drinking Islay whisky on a weekly basis for more than a year now and the aftertaste is pretty similar. I don’t drink whisky during the day, though, do it’s nice to be able to get that same smokey feeling during daytime.

I prefer to brew it on the light side, though…
